Scan to Model is the process of converting 3D scan data (such as a point cloud or a mesh) to a 3D CAD Model that can be edited, modified, printed or manufactured. Converting 3D scan data to a CAD Model is a crucial step in the product development process. It allows designers and engineers to create precise digital models of physical parts and products, which can then be used for manufacturing and product design purposes.

Scan data provides an accurate reference for product design, whether the product being designed is supposed to capture the size, shape, style and fit of the scan data or the product being designed is supposed to fit or seal to it, or mount to the parts and surfaces represented by the scan data. Scan to Model or Scan to CAD is closely related to what is often referred to as Reverse Engineering, but its application is much broader.

At its core, the process of converting 3D scan data to a CAD Model involves using specialized software to extract geometric information from the scan data that standard CAD software can reference to produce a model. This process can be complex and time-consuming but it’s essential for ensuring that the resulting CAD model is accurate and reflects the real-world object as closely as possible.

There are various tools and techniques available for converting 3D scan data to a CAD model, including automatic surfaces and manual modeling techniques. The best approach will depend on the specific requirements of the project as well as factors such as the complexity of the object that was scanned and the level of detail required in the resulting CAD model.

It is likely that the process will require input from the customer in order to provide the results the customer needs/expects, communication is essential.

We can often deliver the CAD model in the format that suits your needs best, such as the following CAD programs:

  • PTC’s Creo
  • Siemens NX
  • Catia
  • SolidWorks

We can also provide IGES and STEP files that can be imported into your CAD program, this is often the best and most affordable option depending on your needs and the geometry being created.

If you are interested in our Scan to Model service, please contact us with your project details and we will get back to you to discuss your requirements and schedule. We look forward to working with you.
